Garages and motor trade

In a trade with a bad name, stars count double.

Everybody has a story about a garage that overcharged them. Reviews are what separates your workshop from that story.

A workshop’s reviews are asked for when the car is handed back, answered every one — the bad ones included, and without arguing about the invoice in public — and never bought, because Google’s policies forbid fake and incentivised reviews.

Last reviewed:

The suspicion you start with

A workshop begins every relationship with an unearned suspicion hanging over it: that it will overcharge or replace things that did not need replacing. Nothing dismantles that better than twenty people saying that here the fault was explained and the price charged was the price quoted.

The moment to ask: handover

When the customer collects the car, has paid what they were told and the noise has gone, they are happier than they will ever be with you again. That is the moment: a sentence as you hand over the keys and a QR code on the invoice. Two weeks later they no longer remember.

Replying without arguing about the invoice in public

The difficult review in this trade is always the same: «they charged me more than quoted». The temptation is to itemise the invoice in the reply, and it is a mistake: you end up arguing with one customer in front of all the future ones. A useful reply explains how you work — written quote, a call before any extra work — and offers to go through it privately.

Buying them shows and costs dearly

Google’s policies forbid fake and incentivised reviews. In a neighbourhood business, a run of reviews from people two provinces away is glaringly obvious and does more damage than the score it was meant to cover.

What we do about it

Part of the maintenance: you never have to ask, and it is never billed apart.

  • An alert for every new review The same day, above all the bad one.
  • Help with replying With a written rule, and no arguing about invoices in public.
  • A request at handover A QR on the invoice and a sentence with the keys.
  • Reviews visible on the site The good ones you already have, where people decide.
  • Reporting the ones that break the rules With an argument, when policies are breached.
  • No buying stars We neither ask for them nor arrange them.

Frequently asked questions

Can an unfair review be deleted?

It gets reported if it breaks the policies. If it is a sincere opinion, it gets answered: a good reply convinces more than the review itself.

Can I give away a car wash for a review?

No. It is forbidden and it shows. Asking, you can, and it works.

Do I reply myself?

Usually we suggest the text and you publish it. In a workshop the owner’s voice shows a great deal.

How many reviews do I need?

More than the place next door, and recent. Five from this month are worth more than thirty from three years ago.

Where all this comes from

Every figure and every rule quoted above, linked to the official text.

When did you last ask for a review?

If you cannot remember, that is the cheapest and most profitable job on your list.
