What your website includes

One tap, and they are already writing to you.

The button opens the conversation with the message already started, and it says something different depending on the page. No writing the number down, no dialling.

The WhatsApp button opens a conversation straight with the business’s number and with text already written that changes according to the page it was pressed from, using the click to chat link that WhatsApp itself documents, with nothing to install on the site or on the customer’s phone.

The distance between a doubt and a customer

Almost everyone who lands on a local business website arrives with one very specific question: whether you have an appointment this week, whether you come out to their street, whether the thing in the photo comes in another colour. That question competes with the effort of asking it. A form is five fields and a wait; a phone call takes finding the right moment; WhatsApp is already open on the other screen.

The button removes that effort entirely: press it, and the conversation opens with your number and the message already begun.

The message already written, and different on each page

WhatsApp allows a conversation to open with text already in place through its click to chat links, and that is more useful than it sounds. From the kitchen renovations page, the message starts «Hello, I wanted to ask about a kitchen renovation». From a specific catalogue reference, it carries the reference inside it.

For the customer it means not having to explain themselves. For you it means knowing where each conversation came from without asking, which is the part you appreciate when fifteen arrive in a day.

A button that does not cover the site

The floating button is useful and easy to overdo: if it sits on the corner where the text is, or jumps on top of the content on a phone, it is more nuisance than help. We leave it visible but out of the way, and on a computer it opens WhatsApp Web, which is where the person browsing from an office desk actually is.

Worth knowing before you add one

Two things, and both matter. The first is that the number of whoever writes to you is personal data: it is there to answer their question, not to fatten a broadcast list. If you want to send them offers later, you have to ask, and they have to be able to say no. The second is that WhatsApp has its own rules for business accounts, set out in its messaging policy, and one of them is that you do not message people who have not written first.

And a third, more practical one: a WhatsApp button on a site where nobody answers until Tuesday is worse than no button at all. If you are not going to be able to attend to it, better a form that promises a reply within 24 hours and keeps that promise.

What we do about it

Part of the maintenance: you never have to ask, and it is never billed apart.

  • Floating button and one in the footer Always to hand, without covering the site or jumping on the text.
  • The message already written And different on each page, so you know what they mean from the first line.
  • It opens on a computer too On a desktop it goes to WhatsApp Web, not to a blank screen.
  • Visible hours If you answer from nine to six, it says so, so nobody expects a reply at midnight.
  • A privacy note What you do with that number, said where it belongs and in two lines.
  • An alternative for everyone else Phone and form in plain sight: not everyone wants to open a conversation.

And this you change with one sentence

You write what you want changed and we publish it.

Put WhatsApp on the pricing page as well

Added, with the message opening on the subject of quotes.

Change the number: we answer from the workshop line now

Changed on the button, in the footer and on the Google profile.

Take WhatsApp off in August, there is nobody here

Removed and replaced with the form, saying when you are back.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need WhatsApp Business?

It is not compulsory for the button, but it helps: it keeps the business number separate from your personal one and adds opening hours, quick replies and a catalogue. If you answer from your personal phone, sooner or later you will want it.

Can I tell which page someone wrote from?

Yes: the message arrives already started with a different opening line depending on the page, so it shows in the first line.

Can I use that number to send offers?

Not on the strength of the enquiry. Commercial messaging has to be asked for separately with an easy way to opt out. WhatsApp’s own rules for business accounts also limit it.

What if I do not want to give out my mobile?

Then we do not add a button, or we add one with a number that belongs only to the business. Your personal number never gets published unless you decide it.

Does it replace the contact form?

No. They live together: WhatsApp for the quick things, the form for anything that needs photos, measurements or documents attached and a written record.

Where all this comes from

Every figure and every rule quoted above, linked to the official text.

How many questions go unasked on your website?

The ones that feel like too much bother. A well placed button turns them into conversations, and conversations into customers.
