Building and renovation

The job ends well: ask for the review that day.

In renovation nobody hires without asking somebody. Reviews are that somebody when the client knows nobody who has hired you.

A building company’s reviews are asked for on handover day, answered every one — including those about jobs that ran into trouble — and never bought, because Google’s policies forbid fake and incentivised reviews.

Last reviewed:

Word of mouth, but written down

This trade has always moved on recommendation, and it still does: the only thing that has changed is that the recommendation is now read on a phone instead of heard at a family lunch. A building company with twenty recent, well answered reviews has the equivalent of twenty relatives recommending it.

Handover day

When the job is handed over finished and clean, the client is at the best point of the whole relationship. That is the day to ask for the review, in person and without circling. A month later, once they are used to the new kitchen, they no longer remember what it took to build.

The review about the job that went wrong

It will arrive, because in renovation things go wrong. A useful reply acknowledges what happened without textbook excuses, explains how it was resolved and what has changed so it does not recur. Whoever is reading knows perfectly well that jobs go wrong: what they are measuring is what you did when it did.

And no buying them

Google’s policies forbid fake and incentivised reviews. Besides, in a local business a handful of generic reviews with no photo and no detail stand out a mile, right in front of the client you were trying to convince.

What we do about it

Part of the maintenance: you never have to ask, and it is never billed apart.

  • An alert for every new review The same day, above all the awkward one.
  • Help with replying Including when the job genuinely went wrong.
  • A request on handover day In person and with the link ready.
  • Reviews visible on the site Next to the job they refer to, where possible.
  • Reporting the ones that break the rules With an argument, when policies are breached.
  • No buying stars We neither ask for them nor arrange them.

Frequently asked questions

Can an unfair review be deleted?

It gets reported if it breaks the policies. If it is a sincere opinion, it gets answered, and a good reply convinces more than the criticism.

Can I ask for the review over WhatsApp?

Yes, if it is a client you already talk to there. Without incentives and without pestering.

Do I reply myself?

Usually we suggest the text and you publish it. In this trade the owner’s own voice shows a great deal.

How many do I need?

More than the company next door, and recent. Five from this year are worth more than twenty from four years ago.

Where all this comes from

Every figure and every rule quoted above, linked to the official text.

Did you ask for a review at your last handover?

If not, a free recommendation walked away. We set up the routine so it stops happening.
